Abstract

A closed-form solution of the coast-arc problem in a Newtonian central force field is derived applying properties of generalized canonical systems for elliptic, circular, parabolic, and hyperbolic motions. This generalized canonical approach involves a set of Mathieu transformations and requires the evaluation of only one integral related to the Kepler's classic equation.
