Abstract

In this thesis, three-dimensional hybrid-mixed stress elements are used for structural analysis of laminates. In the formulation of the hybrid-mixed finite elements, stress and displacement fields are simultaneously and independently approximated in the domain as well as the displacement on the boundary. Legendre polynomials are used as approximation functions. These approximations are free of any constraint a priori. The orthotropic material has been considered in the element implementation and numerical results for some selected problems have been compared with those from conventional compatibility finite element method. The numerical tests have showed good convergence of results both for displacement and stress. Results for stress converged faster than those for displacement, i.e., convergence has been observed for the lowest levels of refinement. In general, results for p-refinement were better than those for h-refinement.
