Abstract

The growth of the automotive industry leveraged the development of the tooling industry. However stamping tools are designed in compliance with standards, which often results in an oversized configuration of some of them. This is mainly due to the fact that the standards adopted are conservative and did not consider a more refined structural analysis to optimize the design of these tools. Between phases in the construction of a stamping tool, cast iron makes a significant contribution to the final price. An additional aspect to consider is the rigidity of the stamping tools, since the greater the rigidity of the tool components, the smaller the influence on the deformation rate of the final product obtained by stamping. Based on these motivations, Topological Optimization (TO) was used to obtain lighter tools, with the objective of reducing costs, while being more rigid, aiming to obtain a final product of higher quality. The objective of this work was to develop a methodology to implement topological optimization in the design of the tables of a stamping tool. The developed methodology was divided into three levels dedicated to the design of a feasible product using topological optimization. The topological optimization results were displayed for the transport and stamping requests on the lower and upper tables of the drawing tool. It was concluded that changing the design concept through topological optimization results in a lighter and more rigid structure.
