Abstract

This thesis investigates the application of robot-based milling processes for manufacturing thick components made of Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymers (CFRP). Traditional milling processes pose significant challenges when applied to CFRP, which lead to issues such as excessive tool wear, delamination, and fiber pull-out. This study aims to define the requirements and restrictions for implementing robot-based milling as a viable alternative under specific boundary conditions. The research is structured around three main domains: material, cutting tool, and robot-based milling system. Key research questions address the primary factors influencing process performance, the adaptation of these factors to enhance performance, and the integration of new strategies and technologies to overcome existing challenges. Experimental investigations include various process parameters, tool geometries, and advanced technologies such as ultrasonic assistance. The findings provide insights into optimizing process parameters, improving tool life, and reducing defects in the parts produced. This work contributes to the body of knowledge by addressing the identified gaps in literature and offering practical guidelines for implementing robot-based milling of CFRP in industrial settings.
