Resumo

This research aims to discuss and evaluate about the use of metal additive manufacturing (AM) for the production of a gas turbine's fuel swirler. An engine component designed for ensuring an adequate mixture and fuel/air recirculation in the primary sector of the combustion chamber, thus, validating its manufacturing availability through this non-conventional fabrication processes. Throughout the development of this dissertation, the advantages of additively manufacturing such component will be presented, considering its application requirements and constraints. In addition to this, the main AM technologies are presented, and the most suitable ones will be selected to produce such a component. Furthermore, this research work presents a comprehensive review of the state-of-the-art concepts and methods related to the topic, which are of utmost importance for the understanding of this field and for creating an ambient for discussion and rational evaluation related to the processes. To achieve the desired results, the author used a statistical decision-making tool, the AHP (Analytic Hierarchy Process), to compare the main manufacturing methods with AM and to create different scenarios with the aim of validating which method is the most favorable for manufacturing the studied component, in respect of four different criteria: "Quality", "Time", "Sustainability" and "Cost". Additionally, the additive manufacture of two samples will be carried out for evaluations, including the study of process and the final characteristics of the part, as well as the evaluation of proposals to optimize the process and the final product quality. Tests will be conducted in conjunction with the IAE (Institute of Aeronautics and Space) to evaluate the component's eligibility for its application in a small gas turbine, the TAPP 5000, all following its respective official standard. It is also included, the surface polishing of one of the samples for the purpose of image processing with the aid of a microscope. In conclusion, considering that both the ITA (Aeronautics institute of technology) and the IAE are subordinate entities of the Brazilian Air Force (FAB), this work aims to strengthen the technical repertoire in the use of an innovative manufacturing method, thus providing support for FAB's strategic programs and adding knowledge that could be beneficial to various private mechanical and aerospace industries situated in the region.
